Since 2005, following the death of his father and mother in law from cancer, Eric Nordgren, of Topeka, Ks, decided to do something to help find a cure and give assistance to local cancer patients. Eric partnered with Sunflowers to Roses (S2R) to form a local annual fundraising effort. He chose S2R because of their unique underwriting by Lockton Insurance that allows 100% of all funds to go to the selected causes. Locally, in Topeka, Ks, Eric's company, Aspen Construction covers all of the cost of fundraising. 50% of each year's fundraising goes directly to a local cancer patient in need. The remaining 50% is split between Livestrong Army of KC, Cancer Action, and Ks Univ Med Ctr Cancer Research Ctr.
This year Eric will be riding in memory of his mother, Carol Nordgren, who recently passed away, and in support of two very special cancer patients. Becca Eakes is married, living in Overland Park, Ks and is the 38 year old mother of 2 daughters, age 9 & 7. Becca has recently retired as an O.R. nurse at KUMC to fight stage 3 melanoma that has spread to the brain. Brighton Taylor is a 6 year old Topeka native who is in his 3rd year of fighting Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Both Becca and Brighton have been receiving treatments at KUMC, and both have substantial financial needs. A late addition to this page: Sadly, Becca lost her fight with cancer on October 4, 2012. Eric will still raise funds as a memorial to Becca in assistance to the surviving family who must deal with her unpaid medical expenses. Brighton continues to improve. Keep both families in your thoughts and prayers.
The 2012 fundraising ride will be a unique 250 mile heart shaped route through northeast Kansas, to be completed in a single day, beginning just before midnight Monday, October 22, and ending in Tinman Circle about 4:30PM, on Tuesday, October 23. In preparation for this ride and to raise awareness for the need for caner screening, Eric rode just under 12,000 miles this past summer. Members of Topeka Road Riders and Kaw Valley Cycling will be assisting with this year's ride and fundraising.
